Gala Premiere “Kulari Ke Pantai” - A Film By Riri Riza and Mira Lesmana

Kulari Ke Pantai, Indonesian children movie directed by Riri Riza and Miles Films, is now playing in all cinemas around Indonesia. This movie is another great collaboration of Riri Riza and Mira Lesmana, and it is believed that the movie will achieve another big success as one of highly qualified children movie with moral and educational messages.

Riri Riza and Mira Lesmana are not some newcomers in the Indonesian filming industry. You can say that through their movie, Kuldesak (1998), directed with Nan Achnas and Rizal Mantovani, the Indonesian young filmmaker gained their momentum on creating highly qualified Indonesian films. Riri and Mira gained their first milestone on children films through the movie, Petualangan Sherina (2000), a spectacular Indonesian children movie of its time. Not only the movie was a major box office, it even beat the Hollywood blockbuster and Disney animated movies for quite sometimes. After Petualangan Sherina, Riri and Mira continue to gain their success on movies such as Ada Apa Dengan Cinta (2002), 3 Hari Untuk Selamanya (2007), Laskar Pelangi (2008), Atambua 39° Celcius (2012), and Ada Apa Dengan Cinta 2 (2016). Laskar Pelangi, a movie adapted from a novel with the same title by Andrea Hirata, was another children movie that went down to Indonesian film history. The movie rewarded Riri Riza with an international award from Hong Kong International Film Festival 2009.

“From Kulari Ke Pantai movie, we are trying to share the value of not easily judging other people. It is easy to judge other people as arrogant or annoying. But sometimes, we have to give ourselves a chance to look closer in order to know other people, like through a road trip.” (Riri Riza)

From each children movies they created, Riri and Mira prove that highly qualified children movies should be able to pass educational and moral messages in a simple and witty way. “From Kulari Ke Pantai movie, we are trying to share the value of not easily judging other people. It is easy to judge other people as arrogant or annoying. But sometimes, we have to give ourselves a chance to look closer in order to know other people, like through a road trip,” explained Riri (source: Antara). “When we created the script, our number one focus was storytelling. Together with Gina S Noer and Arie Kriting, we sat down for quite sometimes to find the right story, build the characters, and add comedy into it,” explained further by Mira.

Somethings that are always highlighted in movies by Riri Riza and Mira Lesmana is how each movie try to capture the stunning natural landscape of Indonesia and its unique culture. On the Kulari Ke Pantai movie, this time Riri and Mira took the audience to explore the beautiful rice paddies of Temanggung, the amazing beaches of Rote Islands, and the breathtaking sunrise of Mount Bromo. And it’s very common that the movies will attract tourists to come and visit the places, so they can get the same experience as the movies they saw.

The casts of Kulari Ke Pantai movie are a mix of experience and first-time actors/actress. The main children characters, Maisha Kanna and Lil'li Latisha, has succeeded to perform a brilliant act as children from a very different background. Kulari Ke Pantai is also the first debut of Suku Dani, an American surfer who grew up in Papua and able to speak the Indonesian and Papuan language fluently.

"When people look up to you, when you have many people that need your guidance, your positivity or negativity, will impact on the way people think and feel during the process.” (Suku Dani)

Suku Dani is one of Malaria House friends and he is very kind to share with us his experience when filming this movie.

How was your experience playing in a movie for the first time? And what was it like to work with Riri Riza and Mira Lesmana?

“The biggest part of this experience was me learning directly from Mas Riri and Mbak Mira. Especially Mas Riri who really helped me a lot to learn about my character into the very details, like how to position my body, my expression, and how to communicate certain emotions, etc. Mas Riri and Mbak Mira are just geniuses! They see Indonesia from a totally different point of view. To be able to see what they see, and how they showed me the aspects of Indonesian culture that are changing, which probably changing for the worse, it’s very interesting. For example, Indonesian kids prefer to use the English language when they communicate instead of Indonesian language. This movie is trying to show the impact of that cultural changing, that it’s okay to use English as your second language, but you should never forget your native one.”

What are your takeaways from this filming experience?

“Both Mas Riri and Mbak Mira taught me about leadership by always being positive since the very beginning to the end of the filming process. I mean, they have like 30 - 40 people in this production, I never saw them in bad mood or negative vibe. And as a leader, it’s very important. When people look up to you, when you have many people that need your guidance, your positivity or negativity, will impact on the way people think and feel during the process.”

The long road of Riri Riza and Mira Lesmana has now recorded in the history of Indonesian filming industry. Now, more and more young Indonesian filmmaker using Riri and Mira films as a benchmark in filmmaking and become part of the filmmaker curriculum in educational institution specializes in filmmaking. And this Kulari Ke Pantai movie will inspire more Indonesian filmmakers to produce more highly qualified children movies, or even just a fun children movies that showcase the beauty of Indonesia landscape and the uniqueness of being Indonesian.

Malaria House followed Dani to attend the premiere of Kulari Ke Pantai and chatted with some of the actor/actress and the audiences. Each audience were so looking forward to this movie, mainly because of their past mind-blowing experience with Petualangan Sherina or just because this is a movie by Riri Riza and Mira Lesmana.
