Rip Curl Cup 2018 at Padang Padang Beach - It’s A Wrap!

The Rip Curl Cup 2018 at Padang Padang Beach has ended with Jack Robinson as the winner. Robinson, 20, of Western Australia, went on a treacherous tube riding tear of the biggest swell to hit Indonesia in years and marked his winning at the competition.

Rip Curl Cup is Indonesia’s longest-running and most prestigious surfing competition held by Rip Curl every year. Entering its 15th year, Rip Curl Cup 2018 was held at Padang Padang Beach and drew surf fans around the world to watch sixteen of the world’s top tube masters – eight of Indonesia’s finest and eight of the world’s best barrel riders take over the show. And there is no greater show on surf than when the Indian Ocean delivers at Padang Padang.

The competition started as early as July 1st, 2018, with the Rip Curl Cup Opening Ceremony that marked the start of the one-month event holding period. Among the international surf stars were Mason Ho (HAW), Jack Freestone (AUS), Damien Hobgood (USA), Gearoid McDaid (IRL), Bruno  Santos (BRA) and Jack Robinson (AUS). There are eight Indonesian surfers invited to the competition, which are defending champion Mega Semadhi, 2 times Indonesian National Champion and 2 times Rip Curl Cup Champ Lee Wilson, and 2014 champ Garut Widiarta.

Prior to the competition, Rip Curl Cup held a beach cleanup at Padang Padang Beach on June 29th, 2018. The Rip Curl surfers and crew, and everyone who wanted to volunteer was gathered at Padang Padang Beach to collect trash from the beach, the car park, and the valley behind the beach. Surfers are the ones who witness how trash has polluted the ocean and this action was a way to share awareness about taking care of the ocean.

One of the most memorable moment on this competition was the incoming of a powerful southwest swell that hit the southern coast of Bali on July 15, 2018. The waves at Padang Padang Beach had officially reached the world-class caliber tube riding. “As a surfer in Indonesia, this swell is one of the most anticipated one throughout the year.” Said James Hendy, Marketing Manager of Rip Curl SEA.

The epic finals day on Thursday, July 19th, 2018 was closed with one of the largest and most powerful swells that hit Indonesia during this year. Jack Robinson, a 20-year-old barrel maestro that has been invited to the Rip Curl Cup since the age of 15, but never made it to finals day, has finally got his show on the Rip Curl Cup 2018. On the heaviest day at Padang Padang beach, in recent memory, Robinson went on a tube-riding tear, scoring three 9-point rides and a perfect 10 en route to perhaps the most impressive achievement of his young career. Robinson’s 19.90 Finals total was the highest of the event and left his fellow finalists in a combination situation they could never recover from. Uluwatu local and Trials surfer Agus “Blacky” Setiawan finished in second place with 17.15, followed by Bol Adi Putra (IND) with 15.75 and 2016 winner Mega Semadhi (IND) with 11.00. “It was worth the wait,” said Jack Robinson, the Western Australia surfer. “This was the best waves I’ve seen at Padang Padang since Jamie O’Brien won it back in 2009. “I was a little kid watching it then and I always wanted to be in it from that day on. And now I won!” Said Robinson, a regular visitor to bali during Rip Curl Cup season.

“I feel so lucky,” said Mega Semadhi, the champion of last year Rip Curl Cup. “I got almost all of the trophies from every position. It’s been an epic two days with the swells. Everyone is having fun.”
